A fast and agile planning and analysis tool: What sets Microsoft Power BI apart

SAP or Microsoft? Many companies are asking themselves this question – and in different areas. In the meantime, a potpourri of tools has emerged, all of which can be decisive for business success. The focus has long been on them: Data. They form the basis for important decisions. They can be used to create short-term and long-term forecasts. And they help to deploy resources correctly or find the ideal suppliers. They are therefore the foundation without which nothing works.

But data alone is still not enough. These effective tools are needed to ensure that it is not a case of “Rien ne va plus” in economic roulette, as in a real casino. They analyze the data and bring the hidden to light.

One option is the “Analytics Cloud” from SAP, another is Microsoft’s counterpart “Power BI”. We introduce you to the latter.

A powerful planning tool: Microsoft Power BI

Just like the SAP Analytics Cloud, Microsoft Power BI is also a reporting, analysis and planning platform. This provides companies with a front-end product that supports them in collecting, evaluating and visualizing data and subsequently using it as a basis for decision-making. And it doesn't matter whether they use it to create normal dashboards or to gain new insights through segmentation, classification and the like.

Company bosses thus always have an overview of business processes and the company's success and can also share graphically prepared results and findings with other people on any end device. Both tools also rely on tools that allow mathematical optimization. This is called "Joule" in the SAP Analytics Cloud and "Copilot" or "ChatGPT" in Power BI.

Microsoft Power BI or SAP Analytics Cloud?

Whether for short-term analyses or longer-term planning - Microsoft Power BI is versatile, agile and has its finger on the pulse. But SAP Analytics Cloud is also making a name for itself. Microsoft Power BI or SAP Analytics Cloud - that is the question. And the answer? It can't be generalized.

After all, which tool is ultimately the right one for your company depends primarily on user preferences and the system architecture. This means that those who already have Microsoft data at their core will choose Power BI. If, on the other hand, you rely on SAP products, possibly use a data warehouse that is closely interwoven with SAP data or want to integrate other elements into an SAP program, you should get the SAP Analytics Cloud.

Microsoft Power BI: The advantages at a glance

Let's take a closer look at the advantages of Microsoft Power BI:
1
Cloud model:
The trend towards software-as-a-service does not stop at the planning and analysis sector, which is why Microsoft Power BI is also a cloud model - with all the advantages that this entails: there is no need for lengthy installation on local computers and Microsoft takes care of updates itself. The system can also be accessed at any time.
2
Low-threshold access:
Power BI is included in the "Microsoft Office 365" license - and with this basic version you can already manage a lot without having to upgrade. The barriers to entry into the world of Power BI are therefore low. This software can also be learned quickly and intuitively because many users are familiar with the first impression of the user interface - programs such as "Excel" or "Access" send their regards. There is no doubt that Power BI is therefore a user-friendly tool that is intended for end users without in-depth IT knowledge.
3
High speed:
With Power BI, the name says it all, because this powerful tool is characterized by its high speed - and also scores points with its modern technology. All this becomes particularly clear when you compare it with similar analysis tools from other manufacturers.
4
Compatibility:
Power BI naturally works excellently in combination with Microsoft products such as Copilot or Fabric. It is also possible to use add-ons, for example to integrate additional graphics that have been developed by another company. This makes it a versatile all-rounder.
5
Artificial intelligence:
AI and machine learning have long since ceased to play a subordinate role in Power BI. This allows dashboards, analyses and the like to be created even more quickly.

The limits of Microsoft Power BI

However, every tool also has its limitations - in the case of Power BI, it can be said that backward compatibility is not always a given. This means that the tool sometimes has its difficulties with old databases.

All those who like to work with real-time data also have to make concessions with Power BI in this respect. By comparison, the SAP Analytics Cloud has live access to data from S/4HANA, BW/4HANA or SAP Datasphere. And this special feature has a positive effect on operations, for example to generate quick evaluations.

And then there is something else where there is potential for improvement - but this relates to all platforms that work with AI: Because all those instruments that use a broad question tool such as ChatGPT sometimes also utilize false information that is circulating in abundance on the Internet - currently, the tools still lack the necessary intelligence to distinguish this. Although this dilemma can be handled better in a corporate GPT or delimited framework, the whole thing is still in its infancy.

And yet these developments also have advantages: Because everything that ChatGPT, for example, is currently learning will also benefit Copilot - and improve the platform in the long term. So we will see what the future holds.

Focus on automatic report generation

Speaking of the future, let's now take a look at a development that is closely linked to this and is also on the rise: automatic report generation.

Already today, Microsoft's Copilot and ChatGPT or SAP's Joule can be fed with simple instructions and spit out excellent reports in no time at all. The tools also check calculations and the existing data basis in the background. And there may even be additional recommended elements on top, as the tools learn and remember who generated which list in which form and when.

Power BI in particular is already very strong in this area - but in future this development will gain even more momentum, making it even easier to create reports.

Whether SAP Analytics Cloud or Microsoft Power BI depends primarily on user preferences and the system architecture. Both tools are advanced reporting, analysis and planning platforms for collecting, evaluating and visualizing data and using it as a basis for decision-making. And both have their advantages and disadvantages. In any case, we at scc are at home in both worlds and focus on individual consulting. So we take a very close look at whether SAP's Analytics Cloud or Microsoft's Power BI is more suitable for you and then get everything underway.
