Business AI: How SAP is transforming the SAP universe and the world of analytics

A virtual assistant that guides you through the booking process. A chatbot that identifies the biggest CO₂ emitters in the supply chain. Or a tool that analyses company data and helps with planning. None of this is a utopian vision of the future any longer; rather, it is within reach – and in some cases is already possible today. The driving force behind all this is known as AI. And it is now steadily increasing the pace of progress within the SAP universe too. The most important component powering this vast machine is, fittingly, named after the international unit of energy: SAP Joule.

We’ll reveal exactly what lies behind it, why Joule is set to turn the SAP landscape on its head, and what benefits this brings.

May we introduce you to SAP Joule?

So, the first question is: who or what is SAP Joule? It is an AI co-pilot that is integrated into SAP cloud products. This generative AI guides you, provides comprehensive insights into SAP solutions, speeds up processes, delivers insights, summarises data or structures unstructured data. This makes the system smarter, more efficient and enables it to evolve independently. At the same time, it supports and assists with the automation of standard processes, thereby saving time and resources.

And SAP now intends to gradually integrate this forward-looking generative AI assistant into the entire SAP ecosystem. Its scope of application is divided into three dimensions:

Informational:

Joule can be queried regarding business data and provides information.

Navigational:

Joule can guide users through programmes and acts as a virtual assistant.

Transactional:

Joule can process data and integrate it into the SAP system.

And that’s by no means all – other key features of Joule include:

SAP is opening up when it comes to business data and has launched a partnership with Microsoft. This means that Joule can, for example, also interact with Microsoft Copilot or access data in MS Teams or other Microsoft products.

Languages:

The tool is currently only available in English, but French, German, Spanish and Portuguese are set to be added from the third quarter of 2024.

Data accuracy:

SAP limits its scope to business data and, according to its own statements, endeavours to present this data accurately, thereby curbing so-called ‘hallucinations’.

Embedded AI Capabilities vs. Customized AI

AI in the SAP world can take various forms – there are two main areas:

Embedded AI Capabilities:

This simply refers to applications in which Joule is already integrated or is in the process of being integrated. These include, for example, the HR solution SuccessFactors, SAP Supply Chain Management and SAP Business Technology Platform. Joule is also already available in both the private and public cloud. Further areas are being added on an ongoing basis.

Customized AI:

With the so-called ‘Generative AI Hub’, SAP also provides a toolkit featuring various models, such as the well-known GPT-4. This enables organisations to build their own solutions, optimally tailored to their specific needs, which operate on the basis of language models. The term ‘Company GPT’ is therefore appearing with increasing frequency in this context. At present, this is also the largest suite of AI models on offer, positioning SAP as a pioneer in this field.

SAP Joule is constantly evolving. As a result, the SAP analytics environment will be even more strongly influenced by AI in the near future and will also receive support from this smart co-pilot – for example, in data analysis and data classification, or when creating dashboards. This expands its scope to include a fourth dimension: the analytical one. In concrete terms, this means that Joule is designed to access and visualise a wide variety of data. And that could revolutionise the field of analytics.
