Planning the future together – SAP IBP at Greiner Bio-One

There are projects where you can sense right from the start: This is going to be something big. That’s exactly how our joint venture with Greiner Bio-One felt – an international company specialising in high-quality plastic products for the in-vitro diagnostics, biotechnology, and diagnostic and pharmaceutical industries. Following intensive preparations in November 2024, the time had finally come in January: The official kick-off in Kremsmünster was due to take place. scc from Vienna was selected as the implementation partner, resulting in a core project team comprising 8 colleagues from Greiner Bio-One and 7 consultants from scc.

Michael Staindl (scc) and Christian Zehetner (project manager on behalf of Greiner Bio-One) ensured a special start. As well as snacks and drinks, we were treated to an exclusive tour of the ‘hallowed halls’ – complete with fascinating anecdotes, insights and a good dose of enthusiasm. It was the perfect opportunity to get to know one another in a relaxed atmosphere and lay the foundations for a strong partnership.

An integrated, global planning solution

The aim of the project was to introduce an integrated planning solution to support Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP) based on SAP IBP. This enables Greiner Bio-One to establish a single point of truth for medium- and long-term planning across the entire supply chain.
The solution connects seven production sites – in Austria (2), Germany, Hungary, the USA, Thailand and Brazil – as well as numerous sales offices worldwide. Working together with our scc supply chain planning experts, a global system was thus established in a short space of time: kick-off in January, go-live in September 2025 – thanks to the interconnection of the individual countries, no further roll-outs are necessary.

Digital transparency through the 'Digital Twin'

The implementation is based on data from the existing SAP R/3 ERP system and the SAP BW system. The solution has been designed to remain compatible with a modern SAP S/4HANA ERP system in the future. By linking master data and transaction data, a Digital Twin of the entire Greiner Bio-One supply chain is created. This Digital Twin makes it possible to anticipate bottlenecks, simulate scenarios and make decisions at an early stage – a clear step away from reactive ‘firefighting’ towards proactive, data-driven management.

Demand Planning – flexible, integrated, transparent

In Demand Planning, requirements can in future be managed and analysed at flexibly selectable levels of aggregation – ideal for sales teams, key accounts, sales directors and the Commercial Excellence Team. Thanks to tight integration with the ERP system, sales histories and existing customer orders are automatically incorporated. This is complemented by forecasts, forecast accuracy metrics, dashboards and a multi-stage approval process that is precisely tailored to Greiner Bio-One’s requirements.

Supply Planning – tactical, transparent and global

Building on the requirements from demand planning, SAP IBP supports tactical production, capacity and inventory planning, as well as procurement, stock transfer and replenishment planning. Backorders, stock levels, transport and OEE data from the MES system are also taken into account. This creates a holistic view of the supply chain – from manufacturing to global distribution.

Our timetable was strict but achievable: the Explore phase, comprising seven workshops on demand and supply planning, began in January. This was followed in March by the Realise phase, and the go-live took place successfully and on schedule in September 2025. The project was driven by a dedicated team comprising experts from scc and Greiner Bio-One. Throughout the project, it was (and still is) clear that collaboration, openness and expertise mesh perfectly here. A fantastic – and vital – foundation, the success of which speaks for itself.

The project forms part of the close partnership between Greiner AG and scc across a range of areas. In the area of SAP IBP, we are particularly pleased that, following the SAP Quality Award-winning implementation at Greiner Packaging International in 2023, we have now also been able to successfully implement the IBP roll-out at Greiner Bio-One together.

A truly exciting – and, to be perfectly honest, at times also challenging – period lies behind us. But the result speaks for itself. The joint project wrap-up, which took place on 5 November 2025, was another great opportunity to look back on the project together.
