An overview of the variants

Private or public – that is the question. At the heart of both options is S/4HANA, an enterprise software solution developed by SAP. It can be used to map virtually all business processes and areas – from production and procurement through to human resources and all financial and analytics processes. And S/4HANA Cloud is now available in two versions.

Although both are cloud applications, they differ significantly in terms of complexity and operating model:

Public Edition:

This version, also known as SAP Public Cloud, is a pure Software-as-a-Service solution. It provides customers with software where the infrastructure is managed by SAP itself. The functionality of the cloud solution is therefore largely predefined and can only be adapted to individual requirements to a limited extent. For those for whom standardised processes are sufficient, this is an excellent choice, as it is simple, quick and cost-effective to get started.

Private Edition:

The SAP Private Cloud offers far greater scope for configuration, expansion and customisation, making it similar to traditional on-premises systems. In this case, too, SAP is responsible for operations. Anyone wishing to implement more customisations or who has already set up their own highly complex processes would therefore be better off choosing this option.
