FH Steyr & scc: How we prepare students for the working world together

They are inquisitive. They are innovative. And they are already shaping the reality of tomorrow’s world today. With ideas. And with a lot of drive. We are talking about the students of the FH Steyr. And we have had the privilege of working with these bright minds for a number of years now – and what’s more, a fruitful symbiosis has developed. In other words: scc supports the students in their studies and vice versa we benefit from the expertise of this next generation. And we are particularly proud of the fact that some graduates of the FH Steyr are already an integral part of our scc-family.

Getting a taste of the practice

It all started with a guest lecture by scc at the FH Steyr. This was so well received by the students that it ended with an inquiry as to whether we would be interested in working together – for the course “Company Project”. The direct connection to the students and the possibility to support them in their individual development and to prepare them for the job market were the main reasons why we immediately liked this idea – and finally accepted. The aim of the course is to show students how they can apply their theoretical knowledge to real companies, what added value their know-how can offer in practice, and what their professional future might look like.

In order to offer students the best possible insight and at the same time a realistic challenge, we have created a fictitious project: a company in helicopter production. Each semester, 6 students can choose to work with us as part of the company project course and thus drive this project forward together. The students learn from our internal professionals how customer projects are handled, are involved in design thinking workshops, can define and evaluate production processes, identify relevant KPIs, implement them in visualization tools, create databases and much more. Each project team builds on the knowledge and work of the previous teams and thus continues to develop the fictitious Heli GmbH.

Highly qualified employees of tomorrow

For us at scc, the cooperation with the FH Steyr also means the chance to bring the young talents closer to the job as an SAP consultant: "Personally, it is important to dust off the job description. Hardly anyone knows that an SAP consultant can also be creative and realize his or her own potential. Yet the job offers so many different facets. Especially IT consulting in the field of analytics is very diverse and gives room for design and creativity - for example, with regard to dashboard design and storytelling. And that is exactly what we want to convey to the students in the course," says Clemens Stadler, student supervisor at scc. Of course, we are particularly pleased if the collaboration within the framework of the course is also the first step towards an employment relationship.

New digitization center at FH Steyr

Further development is the order of the day at FH Steyr - and therefore also in the new DigiSpace. There, students and (partner) companies can experience the potential of digitization up close and help shape and experience it on 500 m². The focus is on the economic use of digital technologies in companies, as well as the successful implementation of digital strategies. The Digitization Center uses concrete use-case examples of digital transformations in corporate management to show how companies can benefit and what students can learn in the process.
At the end of April, the new Digitization Center at FH Steyr was opened - and scc was also there in its role as educator of the students. More precisely, we created a dashboard-challenge for the students. In preparation for this challenge, we as scc were able to provide the students with the data basis from practice, which focused on the topic of sustainability in relation to supply chains, production and materials. The students were able to demonstrate their skills to the many visitors. Among them were well-known personalities such as Doris Hummer (President of the Upper Austrian Chamber of Commerce) and Thomas Stelzer (Governor of Upper Austria), who listened enthusiastically to the students' results.

Dr. Klaus Arthofer, Professor FH Steyr

"Since the release of SAP Analytics Cloud, we have maintained a practical exchange with scc on data analysis and visualization as well as the software tools and methods used for this purpose. In several projects, our students had the opportunity to develop dashboards that could actually be used in practice with scc. Clemens Stadler also participated in workshops with professors on reporting tools as a student supervisor at scc. The support with current data sets as well as innovative questions about dashboards on the part of scc at our first Dashboard-Challenge during the opening ceremony of the DigiSpace was a complete success and also fun."
